Hebden Royd Town Council requested that Calderdale investigate means of controlling the consumption of alcohol in public places. Calderdale’s Community Services Panel, chaired by Liberal Demorcrat Councillor Christine Bampton-Smith took up the challenge and last week Calderdale Coucil passed the recommendation that the Designated Public Places Order, which would allow the police to prevent anyone in a built-up area drinking alcohol, would come into effect. The last step is the erecting of information signs.
Councillor Christine Bampton-Smith said ‘ The Scrutiny Panel was determined to get this through, and it has happened - start to finish- in just over a year. The order does not prevent those who are engaged in ordinary behaviour, such as a picnic or a quiet drink by the riverside, from having an alcoholic drink. It does enable the Police to remove alcohol if they think those drinking are displaying anti-social behaviour’
